Website redesign cost: published prices and the SEO line item

The short answer

A website redesign costs what its provider type and scope set: 2026 price guides start freelance and small-studio redesigns in the low thousands of dollars and take agency and enterprise projects into five figures. Quotes also differ on the SEO line item, the URL inventory, redirect map and launch checks that some include and others leave out.

Bar chart of where published website redesign and web design prices start, by provider type, from freelancers and small studios to large agencies and enterprise projects
Where published prices start, by provider type, in US dollars: the low end of each range, or the sample price, in this page's redesign price dataset (the provider-type table below, each bar's source cited there), read 8 October 2026. The Clutch bar covers every kind of web design project, not redesigns alone.

If your business site earns inquiries or sales from Google and a redesign is in this year’s budget, the price depends on who does the work, how much of the site is rebuilt, and whether the quote covers the URL work. The published market ranges below come first, then SEO Migration Studio’s own WordPress redesigns with URL work included.

Website redesign cost by provider type and site size

Prices last checked: 8 October 2026.

Published website redesign prices climb with the size of the provider and the depth of the rebuild. A freelance studio’s 2026 guide starts freelancer and small-studio redesigns at $1,500 and large-agency or enterprise redesigns at $20,0004. The table keeps each range exactly as its source published it, labeled by provider type; GBP ranges come from an agency guide to UK prices and are not converted.

By site size

Two of the guides price by page count. One agency publishes its own redesign rates by page count and places them “at the accessible end” of its market ranges3; an agency guide to UK prices covers a 10 to 25 page site and each page beyond the core set5.

Site size, as published Work, as published Published price Source and date read
About 7 pages Refresh $1,500-$3,0003 One agency’s own rates,
12 to 15 pages Redesign $2,500-$4,5003 One agency’s own rates,
About 20 pages Rebuild $3,200-$6,0003 One agency’s own rates,

Each page beyond the core set, UK Design and development time About £150-£4005 Agency guide to UK prices,

For WordPress sites, the freelance studio’s guide puts a redesign at $2,000 to $12,000 and says the price “depends on plugins, structure, SEO, page count, and how outdated the current site is”4.

Hourly rates and smaller updates

Edits short of a redesign are billed by the hour, by the month or by the task, and hourly rates vary by country and by platform.

Who or what Published rate Source and date read
Web design companies on Clutch, United States, average $100-$149 an hour1 Directory guide,
Web design companies on Clutch, United Kingdom, average $50-$99 an hour1 Directory guide,
Web design companies on Clutch building on WordPress $25-$49/hour1 Directory guide,
Vetted WordPress developers on a marketplace $80-$120 an hour, plus a 17.5% service fee6 Marketplace pricing page,

Rebuilding a small section or a page $300-$1,0004 Studio guide,
A maintenance plan $150-$450 per month4 Studio guide,

The same studio guide sets a point at which edits stop paying: “If your list of updates would take more than 8–10 hours, it’s usually more cost-effective to redesign”4.

What buyers expect to pay

Databox’s 2024 survey, whose respondents were mostly small and medium businesses, found that “50% think a redesign should cost less than $10,000, with just over 30% thinking it should cost between $10,000 and $20,000”2. On the cost side, Clutch says: “Most web design projects reviewed on Clutch usually cost less than $10,000”1.

The Clutch average in the first table sits far above that typical project, a sign of a minority of much larger ones. Clutch notes “a few outliers” in web design pricing, “usually because the scope of the project is bigger or more complex”1.

What moves a redesign quote up or down

A redesign quote moves with four things: how much of the site is rebuilt, how many distinct templates the design needs, who writes the content, and whether page addresses change. Integrations with other software add development time on top.

Restyle, redesign or rebuild

A restyle keeps the structure and content and changes the styling; a redesign changes the design and the page structure; a rebuild replaces the theme and templates entirely. One agency guide calls this spread of meanings “the single biggest reason quotes vary so wildly”3. Two quotes for “a redesign” can therefore describe different projects, so ask each provider which of the three it is pricing.

Templates, pages and content

Templates move design cost more than pages do, according to the same agency guide: “Ten variations of one template cost far less than ten distinct layouts,” because buyers “think in pages, while agencies price in unique designs”3. Content is the other swing item: an agency guide to UK prices adds £1,500-£4,000 to the project total when the agency writes the copy5. The same guide prices a HubSpot or Mailchimp form integration at £500-£1,5005.

URL changes

A redesign that changes page addresses adds the URL work to the quote. Google’s site-move guidance lists “URL paths changes” among its examples of a site move7, so new menu paths or new permalinks call for a redirect map and redirects, as any site move does. A redesign that keeps every URL needs no redirect map, though its new templates still need a parity check.

A platform switch or a domain change in the same project is priced as a migration, and the published migration prices sit in a separate dataset.

The SEO line item: what it covers and what it costs

The SEO line item is the part of a redesign that accounts for every old URL: the URL inventory, the redirect map, the parity check, launch QA and the crawls after launch. Google’s site-move guidance puts the core of it in one line: “It’s important to map your old site’s URLs to the URLs for the new site”7.

Part of the SEO line What it produces What it needs
URL inventory The list of old URLs the redirect map has to cover Google Search Console clicks and impressions, backlink data and current sitemaps
Redirect map Each changed URL mapped to one page, with one 301 redirect The URL inventory and the new page structure
Parity check A parity sheet of old and new titles, headings, canonicals and structured data The staging site and a crawler
Launch QA Launch-day checks of redirects, robots.txt, noindex tags, canonicals and sitemaps Server or WordPress access during the launch window
Follow-up crawls Day-7 and day-30 crawls that check every URL on the inventory A crawler and the signed URL inventory

Google’s guidance names the same kinds of sources for finding old URLs, from sitemaps to “server logs or analytics software for the URLs that get the most traffic”7.

One agency’s redesign guide prices this line as a share of the project, budgeting “SEO migration & launch” at 10 to 15 percent of a full redesign3. Sold on its own, the same work grows with the number of old URLs rather than the number of new templates, because the inventory, the map and the crawls cover each URL. When your developer or agency builds the site, the URL work can be bought as SEO-only packages for developer-built redesigns.

SEO concerns also hold redesigns back: Databox’s 2024 survey found that “40.15% of survey participants consider SEO concerns the top reason holding them back from updating their website”2.

Comparing redesign quotes line by line

Two redesign quotes compare only when they price the same work, so check each one against the same seven lines before comparing totals. Lines 3 to 5 need Search Console data, a crawler or server access; you can check the rest from the quote itself.

  1. Templates. Count the distinct page layouts each quote covers, not only the pages.
  2. Restyle, redesign or rebuild. Check whether the quote keeps your current theme or replaces the theme and templates entirely.
  3. URL inventory. Ask which data the inventory comes from: Search Console clicks and impressions, backlinks and sitemaps.
  4. Redirect map. Check that each changed URL is mapped to one page and redirects with one 301, and who implements the redirects. Google’s guidance warns: “Don’t redirect many old URLs to one irrelevant single URL destination, such as the home page of the new site”7.
  5. Launch and follow-up checks. Look for a staging crawl, launch-day checks and crawls after launch, each with a fix list.
  6. Content. Check who writes or moves the copy, and whether new copy is priced separately.
  7. Handover. Check that the design, the code and the redirect files are yours at the end.

A quote without lines 3 to 5 is cheaper because it prices less work; one agency guide calls SEO migration and redirects “the most commonly omitted line”3. The staging checks behind lines 4 and 5 are set out step by step in the redesign SEO checklist, for you or your developer to run.

How the price dataset was built, and its limits

Every price in the three market tables was read on 8 October 2026 on the page that publishes it, and is printed as published: ranges stay ranges, an open top keeps its plus sign, and GBP prices are not converted to US dollars. Provider types follow each source’s own labels, and SEO Migration Studio’s prices are kept out of those tables and the chart.

The dataset has five limits:

  • Four of the price sources sell redesign or development work themselves: two agencies, a freelance studio and a developer marketplace.
  • Clutch’s figures come from its directory and client reviews and cover every kind of web design project, not redesigns alone.
  • Databox’s survey dates from August 2024, and 77.55 percent of its respondents came from companies with 50 or fewer employees2.
  • The agency and studio guides do not say how many projects their ranges rest on, and they disagree at the low end: the studio guide’s “Website refresh” starts at $5004, an agency guide’s “Visual refresh” at $1,5003.
  • No source in the dataset prices the SEO line item of a redesign in dollars; its one figure is a share of budget from a single agency guide.

SEO Migration Studio’s redesign and SEO-only prices

SEO Migration Studio prices the SEO line item into every WordPress redesign it builds, and sells the same work on its own when your developer or agency builds the site. These are SEO Migration Studio’s own prices, not rows of the market dataset, and they are not ranked against it.

What you buy from SEO Migration Studio Who builds the site The SEO line item From
URL-Verified Redesign SEO Migration Studio, end to end in WordPress Included: signed URL inventory, redirect map, parity check, launch QA, day-7 and day-30 crawls $5,990 / £4,790
SEO Migration Package Your developer or agency The Migration Map and the Launch Check, plus redirect monitoring after launch $1,980 / £1,560
Migration Map Your developer or agency URL inventory, redirect map with import file, parity sheet $1,390 / £1,090
Launch Check Your developer or agency, with a redirect map already written Staging crawl, launch-day checks, day-7 and day-30 crawls $590 / £470

Each price shown is the smallest size, and every size of each package, in USD and GBP, is on SEO Migration Studio’s pricing page. The URL-Verified Redesign’s billing terms tied to the day-30 crawl are printed in full, with their conditions, on the WordPress redesign service page. The phases, and what each side does in them, are set out in how a redesign project runs.

When the SEO line belongs in your redesign budget

If organic search brings in inquiries or sales, the SEO line belongs in the redesign budget whoever builds the site, because every changed URL needs a mapped page before launch. Google’s site-move guidance recommends “server side permanent redirects from the old URLs to the new URLs”7, and the redirect map is what tells the server where each old URL goes. If the site earns little from search and the redesign keeps every URL, the line shrinks to a parity check, launch QA and one crawl after launch.

If your WordPress redesign is planned, send the site address, the page count and your launch window; the quote prices the design, the build and the URL work as one project. If the redesign has already launched and clicks fell, work out what caused the drop before budgeting for more design work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to redesign a website?

It depends first on how much of the site is rebuilt and then on who does the work. A restyle of a small site sits at the low end of the published ranges, a full redesign with a new page structure in the middle, and an enterprise redesign or platform switch at the top. The dataset table above gives each range with its source.

Is $1,500 a good price for a website?

It can be for a small site restyled by a freelancer or a small studio: that is where the two US-dollar freelance ranges in the dataset start. For a business site that earns inquiries from Google, check what the quote leaves out before judging the price, starting with the URL inventory, the redirect map and the launch checks.

How much does it cost to have a website updated?

Updates short of a redesign are priced by time or by task rather than as a project: published rates cover one-off edits by the hour, maintenance plans by the month and a rebuilt section or page per job. The hourly rates table above lists each rate with its source, including average hourly rates in the United States and the United Kingdom.

What does the SEO part of a redesign cost?

Bought on its own, the SEO part is priced by URL count, not by design: SEO Migration Studio’s Migration Map is from $1,390 / £1,090, and the SEO Migration Package, which adds the launch crawls, is from $1,980 / £1,560. Inside SEO Migration Studio’s URL-Verified Redesign it is part of the project price, and one agency guide in the dataset budgets it as a share of a full redesign.
